《男兒當自強》旋律改編自琵琶古曲《將軍令》，為1991年經典武俠電影《黃飛鴻》之電影主題曲，由林子祥原唱，填詞時一字一音，使得音樂風格呈現出雄壯威武的陽剛氣息，提倡民族氣節，讓聽眾熱血沸騰；正因如此，本曲成為家喻戶曉朗朗上口的作品，同時也是最具代表性的武俠片配樂。本曲由日本作曲家波田野直彥改編為室內管樂團作品。
 
The melody of "A Theme to Once Upon a Time in China" is arranged from the ancient Pipa repertoire “Chiang Chun Ling” (means General’s command.) The piece was dedicated to the same title 1991 kung-fu film. Originally sung by Cantonese singer George Lam Tsz Cheung, with each character of the text corresponding to single note, the libretto technique reveals the song with a masculine character. And the nationalism sense of the song also impels the audiences. Therefore, the piece had become a huge hit and the most iconic soundtrack among kung-fu movies. The arrangement is adapted to concert band by Japanese composer Hiko Hatano.
